The International Communication Association's Popular Communication Division / ICA Popular Communication Division / ICA's Pop Comm / is compromised of professionals involved in the scholarly investigation of popular communication and popular culture / pop culture from a variety of communication perspectives.
Most of us are affiliated with academic institutions in higher education / universities and are employed in university departments, such as Mass Communication and Journalism, Speech Communication, Media Studies, or Communication Studies. Others of us are also involved in the study of history, anthropology, American studies, cultural studies, African American studies / race studies or ethnic studies, gender studies, women studies, men studies, family studies, computer-mediated communication / communication technology or technologies / new media studies, folklore and folk art, performance studies and more. Therefore, we encourage a variety of scharly research methods / methodolgies such as quantitative methods, qualitative methods, survey / surveys, content analysis, interview / interviews / interviewing, focus groups, ethnographic observation / ethnography / ethnographies, participant observation, case study / case studies
We study popular communication phenomena, texts, artifacts, genre, producers, audiences, performance, events, and practices, mass audiences, mediation, the mediated, a medium, teen or youth culture, representation, fans, fandom, sports, spectacles, dance, digital computer revolution, ads / advertising / advertisement, consumer culture, hyperconsumption, communication technology or technologies, print and broadcast / broadcasting and journalism / online journalism, news, newspapers, comic strips / comics / cartoons, magazines, photography, photos, photojournalism, digital images, music, cinema / film / movies, radio, television / TV, video games / videogames / online gaming, World Wide Web / WWW / web sites / website Internet, online chats or forums, Web Logs / weblogs, blogs / blogging, and more. Current leaders of our organization include Jonathan Tankel, Debra Merskin, and Lynn Schofield Clark. Barbie Zelizer was the first chair of the Division. Steve Smith was the first chair of the Popular Communication Interest Group and founder. Other leaders who have served are Jane Banks, Mary Anne Moffitt, William Evans, Jonathan Tankel, and Dennis Corrigan.
The editors of Popular Communication (Journal) published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates are active members of our organization. Sharon R. Mazzarella and Norma Pecora are co-editors of the journal. Matthew P. MacAllister is the book review editor of the journal.
