A Photographic Tour of America’s Intentional Communities

Dr. Don Janzen will present USI’s annual Communal Studies Lecture, “A Photographic Tour of America’s Intentional Communities” on April 9, 2009. Dr. Janzen has been photographing historic and contemporary intentional communities (such as Shaker sites and New Harmony) for thirty years and is preparing to donate his valuable collection of 12,000 photographs and a database listing 4,000 communal groups to USI’s Rice Library. His knowledge, wit, and unique photographs will make for an educational and entertaining presentation.
A native of Louisville, Dr. Janzen attended the University of Louisville and attained B.S and M.S. degrees in physics. After working as an experimental physicist for five years, he changed careers and enrolled at the University of Michigan where he received a Ph.D. in anthropology, with a specialty in archaeology. He directed six seasons of fieldwork in the Falls of the Ohio River region. Next, he turned his attention to historic archaeology and directed five seasons of fieldwork at the Pleasant Hill Shaker Village in central Kentucky. His book, The Shaker Mills on Shawnee Run, represents the first publication on Shaker archaeology. Dr. Janzen served as the Executive Secretary of the Communal Studies Association for eleven years and changed his interest from archaeology to cultural anthropology. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of USI’s Center for Communal Studies.
