Kristy BierlyHi. I’m a freshman at the University of Southern Indiana, and my name is Kristy. I’m a small town girl who moved to the city. I come from the second smallest public school in Indiana. Medora is in south-central area of the state. It’s a K-12 school and consists of around 300 people.

At Medora I was active in Student Council, and I was the Treasurer my senior year. I participated in track and field my freshman and senior year. I was manager of the track team my sophomore year.

Here is a little about my family. I come from a family of four; it consists of my step-father, mother, my little brother and myself. Also, I can’t forget my cat, Lucky.

My family attends the Medora Pentecostal Church, but since I moved to Evansville, the three hour drive home is not a reasonable drive to go to church. So I found a nice church down here. I now attend Life Apostolic Tabernacle. Church is a major part of my life, besides school. I love going to church.

While here at USI my hope is to major in Business Management with a minor in International Business. I hope to one day work in an international company.

Laura BradyOut of the 10,000 students here at the University of Southern Indiana, there are a lot of ambitions being pursued. One ambition for many students on campus is to get a degree in education. Well, at least I believe there are many students wanting to go into that direction. I have only been on campus since August 22nd, and I have met several students seeking elementary education and special education degrees. I have even come across a student who wants to be an art teacher!

My name is Laura Brady and I too am an elementary education major!  I have always loved being in the classroom.  I realized my senior year in high school that being a teacher goes way beyond teaching.  It’s not as easy as some think it is.  In Indianapolis, where I’m from, I was involved in my high school’s cadet teaching program, from which I gained a lot of knowledge about teaching and how school systems run.

I have a wonderful family that has always been extremely supportive of my dream.  My dad keeps reminding me that “Teachers don’t make very much.”  But, if it were about the money I would not be a teacher!  My parents have always told me to be positive, enthusiastic, and to just follow my dream...which is what I am doing here at USI.

Kristin CoppGreetings from Evansville! My name is Kristin Copp. I am an eighteen-year-old female. I am from a small city in Indiana, called Elkhart. Elkhart is located six and a half hours north west of Evansville.

Currently, I am a freshman at the University of Southern Indiana. My college plan is to study business management in the four years that I am here. After college I hope my career takes me to San Francisco, California, where I can start my own business. My dream is to open a fancy, five star hotel or a sophisticated restaurant at the top of a massive mountain over looking the San Francisco Bay.

On November 10, 1983, my mother, Leisa, and my father, David, had a beautiful baby girl. Being raised as an only child has taught me many valuable skills I can hopefully use in college. The most valued lesson I have learned is nothing in life comes easy; if you want to accomplish your goals you have to work hard and be completely dedicated. With both my parents having business positions, I had to learn how to act like an adult and mature very fast. I believe being raised like this will help me succeed in college.

Lindsey DerricksonLike many others three months ago, I walked across a stage and received a diploma. Having a variety of thoughts and feelings going through my head, I had no idea what was in store for me. I come from a very small town in Indiana called Spiceland. For those of you that have never heard of Spiceland, it has a great resemblance to Mayberry. Moving from a small town to Evansville is definitely a different but great experience.

My name is Lindsey Derrickson. I am a first year freshman here at USI. I came to USI in the pursuit of a nursing degree. Little did I know that I was also going to pursue many other different things, such as friends, laundry, cooking, and how to use a fire extinguisher. (Yes, the last two are related.) As you can tell, I am already enjoying the college experience.

In case you were wondering, no I did not come from aliens. I have two wonderful parents and two younger brothers. My brothers are 17 and 14.  Things usually stay pretty interesting around our house. Although, my family misses me, they are very supportive of my college goals. I know I will make my family proud.

Jennifer FetzHey Everyone, This is Jennifer Fetz coming to you over the Internet with a little bit about myself. I’m 18 years old and am from Georgetown, IN. It’s about 20 minutes from Louisville, KY. I’m a freshman here at USI in Evansville. I’m majoring in Early Childhood Education/Development (whichever you prefer). Most of the classes I’m taking aren’t too bad. Some are a bore but oh well. You always get some of those. I decided to major in Early Childhood Dev. because in high school I took a child development class and really liked it. I also love little kids.

Some of the things I like to do are babysitting, so if you need a baby-sitter you can let me know; horseback riding with my neighbor, Michelle; and hanging out with my new friends and fiancé. I also like to hang out with my sister when she’s home from college in Michigan.

In high school I had several music classes a day. Those were my favorite. My mom’s a music teacher so that’s where I got my love for music. I played handbells for six years, including jr. high, and sang in the choir for three years in high school. Last year our A Capella choir won third at the state contest in Indianapolis, IN.

Misti HelveyMy name is Misti Helvey. I am an 18 year old female. I am from Elkhart, IN. I come from a family that consists of a mom, a step dad, and a sister. My sister is thirteen years old and is in the seventh grade at Concord Junior High. My step dad owns his own business called Kessington Machine Products. They make airplane brakes. My mom is a nail technician and a data processor. I graduated from Concord High School. I decided to come to the University of Southern Indiana to study elementary education. I am taking core classes right now to get myself ready for next year when I start my studies.

Right now I am living in O’Bannon hall. I have three roommates named Michelle, Cassie, and Rachel. I have a few friends that came to the University of Southern Indiana from Elkhart. The activities I enjoy participating in are shopping, working out, and having fun with my friends. On this campus I have a lot of freedom to participate in the activities this college offers, such as many different intramural sports, and other activities that are going on. The University of Southern Indiana has helped me to find myself, and learn a lot of responsibilities.

Megan LoeschMy name is Megan Loesch and I am a freshman at USI. I grew up in Alton, Illinois, where I lived with my father, mother, and older brother. I attended a private elementary school, and then I went on to a public middle school and high school. After thirteen years of schooling in Alton, I was bored. I was bored with the town in general, and I was definitely bored with the people. I knew that I was ready for a change and to move on with my life.

I was on the Internet one day and came across a survey called “The College For You,” and decided to give it a try. I answered questions like the major I was interested in, the area I was looking for, and the financial costs. Many different colleges came up and two caught my eye.  There was a small university in Kentucky, and there was USI. The school in Kentucky was about six hours away from where I lived, and my parents said that it was too far if I ever wanted to come home for a weekend.  It was also more expensive than what I was looking for and it was in desperate need of remodeling.  After visiting USI’s website, I knew that it was the right school for me. My mother and I came to Evansville and immediately fell in love with the town and the university.

Susan Recker

My name is Susan and I currently live in Southern Indiana. I am a student at the University of Southern Indiana. I am an undecided major hoping to graduate in four year with a degree in something that I love to do.

I grew up in a small town called Celestine. My graduating class was 62 people, just to give you an idea of how small of a school we were. At home, I lived with my mom and dad. I have five other brothers and sisters that mean the world to me, but no longer live at home. Their names are Kathy, John, Mike, Kevin, Barbara, and then there is me. Kathy, Kevin, and Barbara are all married to wonderful people, and Kevin, Barbara, and Mike have kids that they all dearly love.

In my free time, I enjoy reading courtroom dramas and writing short stories. I also love to play with children, especially my nieces and nephews. I also enjoy, like any other college student, going out and having a good time with my friends. This is my life in a nutshell and I would not change it for the world if I could.

Jacqueline SimpsonHi! My name is Jacqueline Nicole Simpson and I am 18 years old. I am a freshman at USI, and I am one of those lucky few that really has no idea what to do with their life. I have only been going to USI for a few days now; I really have not had a chance to get really use to my classes. I am not a big reader, but since that really is all of the homework, I have been making myself read at least an hour a night. If I make sure I keep with my homework, I’ll do well in college.

I was born on a cold, wet, and slippery night on January 9, 1984, at eight o’clock at night. The reason I know how the weather was is because every time it is around my birthday my parents like to remind me about the day of my birth. For a while I lived in Indiana, but around the age of three my dad got transferred to Topeka, Kansas. I only lived there for a short period of time. The reason for this was because my dad got transferred again after only a few years of living there. From there we moved to the small town of Greenwood, Indiana. I have lived there most of my life, and I am hoping when I have children I’ll be able to raise them in Greenwood, also.

Courtney WatkinsMy name is Courtney Watkins.  I was born on August 19th in Evansville, Indiana, at 12:01 A.M.  I have a brother who is a year and half younger, and his name is Jamie.  My mom and dad have been divorced since I was about ten years old. My major is business management with a minor in athletic training.  My goal is to be a trainer for a professional sports team and then have my own clinic.  I would also like to have a family in six or seven years.  I know everything I want in life is going to be hard work, but I am willing to put in the time and effort to make it happen.  I only hope I can find a guy who will be supportive of me

While I was in high school I was active in soccer for three years.  I played mostly right wing, left wing defense and stopper.  I had enough playing time to earn my varsity letter and two bars.  My letter jacket is important to me because I worked hard to earn it.

Michelle WhitakerHello!  My name is Michelle Whitaker.  I am one of five children.  I have three brothers and one sister.  Two of my brothers are older than me, and my sister is a year older than me and I have a little brother.  My little brother is the only one of us children who is still in high school.  The rest of us are in college.  I’m originally from Indianapolis.

I chose USI because of the atmosphere of the campus, the nice class sizes, and how everyone down here seems to just love meeting people.  My major is art education.  I figured out my sophomore year of high school that I wanted to be an art teacher.  I love art and I love teaching children.  In high school they had a program where students could go to an elementary school or a middle school and observe or even help teach children.  I tried the middle school level and I fell in love with the way the children grasped on to the idea that they could do this if they just set their minds to it.  I hope by teaching that I will touch a child in some way.

Matthew WynkoopHi, my name is Matthew Wynkoop. (Call me Matt.) I am nineteen years old and a freshman at the University of Southern Indiana. I live in the O'Bannon Hall with three other roommates: Don, Alan, and Rob. We all get along for the most part.

This is my first time being so far from home without the ability to go back home when I want to. Gary, Indiana, which is where I am from, is about five hours north of the university and thirty minutes southeast of Chicago, Illinois. While on campus this year I have decided to be active in as many activities as I can be. I am doing this in effort to keep my mind off of home. So, I joined a five-on-five basketball league, the USI rugby team, and I plan on playing flag football in the intramural league. Doing all of this and my academic work should keep me pretty busy!

Our basketball teams' color is green and our team name is the Urinal Splashbacks. My number is five. I am also a starter for our team. As for rugby, this is my first attempt at ever playing the game!  I played four years of high school football but now, as I am learning, football and rugby are two totally to different sports. The only thing that they have in common is you get hit or you give the hit! I just hope I am ready for what I got myself into, which I am sure I am! Then when flag football rolls around I should be in good shape.
