The Student Writers Union (SWU) is an active group of students interested in creative writing, editing, and publishing. We meet weekly to workshop our own creative writing, discuss ideas and theories related to the process of writing, and talk about new books of interest.
We strive to connect to one another, our campus, and our community with activities such as:
- a brand new collaborative novel project (that’s right, we’re going to write a novel together and then publish it before the school year is over),
- the 2nd annual Write Away Hunger Contests (the top poems and short-shorts win prizes and publication in FishHook (formerly the Aerie), USI’s literary and art magazine),
- free verse project,
- broadsides,
- a banned books reading,
- literary valentines,
- potluck picnics with English students and faculty, and
- a chapbook contest.
Throughout the school year, SWU officers work closely with the editorial staff of FishHook to assist in soliciting submissions, organizing contests, and hosting the annual launch party & reading when the new issue is released each fall.
SWU is open to any student at USI.
