Summer 2012
in the Dominican Republic
During June 2011, Dr.Manuel Apodaca-Valdez (program director) and Dr. Norma Rosas Mayén led a group of six students from the Department of Modern and Classical Languages to the Dominican Republic. With the support of USI Endeavour grants, students completed research projects on location. The research projects focused on particular aspects of African influences on current culture and language in the Dominican Republic. Student topics ranged from Afro-Dominican religions, music and dance, cuisine, linguistics, race, to border Issues between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Students visited various towns and Bateys (plantations) including, Batey Libertad, Batey Cerro Gordo, the town of Dajabón on the border with Haiti, Santiago City, the 27 Charcos, and the beaches of Samaná and Puerto Plata. In addition, students learned about Dominican culture while staying with host families in the City of Santiago. They visited museums, recorded interviews with the local population, and observed daily life and social conditions while being fully immersed in a Caribbean Spanish culture. The group also enjoyed a couple of ecological tours to one of the most spectacular national parks in the Dominican Republic.
This year’s study abroad trip to the Dominican Republic is scheduled for June 6 to July 2, 2012. (Course Prerequisite: consent of instructor). Two weeks of pre-departure instruction are included in the program. For more information contact Dr. Manuel Apodaca-Valdez Mdapodacav@usi.edu |
