Quebec - Study Abroad
University of Quebec at Chicoutimi
Since 1992, USI has been sending students to an immersion program in French at the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi, a lively city two hours north of Quebec City. Students live with a French-speaking family, attend classes every day, and go on excursions to explore the Saguenay region, which has the longest fjord on the continent and great natural beauty. They take an overnight trip to Quebec City, and Montreal is only five hours away by bus. Students take weekly lessons in French traditional and popular music and dance, and there are excellent facilities for sports and exercise. Students choose a three or five-week program, and receive three to six credits in French language and culture from USI. Students at all levels of French study are welcome, and the cost is low because it is subsidized by the Canadian government.
At Chicoutimi, only French is spoken in class, at meals, on the minibus, and in nightclubs and bistros. USI students return from the program speaking and understanding French on a much higher level; they do better in their remaining French courses. Many are double majors, and prospective employers in the fields of education, accounting, nursing, theater, international business, criminology, and tourism (students from all these areas have successfully completed the intensive French program) are impressed by successful completion of this immersion course. Come with us to Quebec, enjoy yourself and learn or improve your French in the best possible environment. USI students from eighteen to sixty-three have enjoyed living, the French experience in Chicoutimi.
USI is working on creating an exchange program with a university in France, and hope to have more news soon about a program for the Summer of 1999. Our first choice is the University of Angers, a historic city in the Loire valley chateau region, one hour by fast train from Paris. We will keep you up to date as this program develops.
