Mission
The Gender Studies minor is an interdisciplinary program that explores
the fascinating and complex connections between sex, gender, human
sexuality, and sexual orientation. Faculty from such departments as History,
Economics, Sociology, English, Philosophy, Communication Studies, Social
Work, Management, and Psychology provide students with a wide range of
perspectives that greatly enrich a Liberal Arts education. Gender is one of
the most fundamental facts of our existence, and courses in this minor will
enhance students’ understanding of its deep significance. The Gender Studies
minor should serve as an excellent complement to any Liberal Arts major.
Objectives
- Increase student understanding of the biological, psychological and
social dimensions of sex and gender
- Provide an arena of critical scholarly thought on issues of gender and
sexuality without adherence to any particular ideology
- Allow for the exploration of all relevant gender issues from feminism
to studies in masculinity; from issues of homosexuality to traditional
family structure. Although many courses do focus on women, the program is
Gender Studies, not simply Women’s Studies.
The Gender Studies Minor Prepares Students For...
- An enriched understanding of themselves and their fellow citizens as
gendered beings.
- Graduate studies in virtually any Liberal Arts field, particularly
Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy, History, English, Communication Studies,
and Social Work.
- Any career in which a more fully-realized understanding of human
complexity is valued.
