Prerequisites and Core Restrictions

Pre-Admission Social Work Courses

These courses must be completed with a GPA of 2.75 and a grade no lower than C in each class before admission to the social work program will be granted. At least two of the courses must have an official grade at the time an application is submitted.

  • SOCW 221: Introduction to Social Work
  • SOCW 222: Social Welfare: Emergence of the Social Services
  • SOCW 239: Human Behavior and the Social Environment
  • SOCW 241: Social Work Intervention

Core 39 Restrictions

Students entering the University during the fall 2014 semester or later will be required to complete Core 39. Students must complete 30 hours of Core 39 courses before admission to the social work program. The following courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C:

Composition

  • ENG 101: Rhetoric and Composition I: Literacy and the Self

Natural Science with Lab

  • BIOL 105: Biology of Human Concern

Social Science/Diversity

  • PSY 201: Introduction to Psychology
  • PSY 261: Lifespan Developmental Psychology
  • SOC 121: Principles of Sociology
  • POLS 102: Introduction to American Politics *

Mathematics

  • A math class at 100 level or higher

Students who attend a junior college may take State and Local Government.

University Core Curriculum Restrictions

Students entering the University before the fall 2014 semester may complete the University Core Curriculum (UCC). Students must complete 36 hours of University Core Curriculum courses before admission to the social work program. A degree checksheet is available for social work majors completing the UCC.

The following courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C:

A1. Composition

  • ENG 101: Rhetoric and Composition I: Literacy and the Self

A2. Mathematics

  • A math class at 100 level or higher

C2. Individual Development/Social Behavior (only 6 hours will count towards the UCC, but all courses must be completed)

  • PSY 201: Introduction to Psychology
  • PSY 261: Lifespan Developmental Psychology
  • SOC 121: Principles of Sociology
  • POLS 102: Introduction to American Politics *

C3. Science

  • BIOL 105: Biology of Human Concern

* Students who attend a junior college may take State and Local Government.

Additionally, students must complete the following courses from the UCC:

C1. History

  • HIST 101: United States to 1865    OR
  • HIST 102: United States since 1865

C2. Individual Development/Social Behavior (only 6 hours will count towards the UCC, but all courses must be completed)

  • ECON 175: Fundamentals of Economics

D. Synthesis
