New Teaching Theatre coming in fall 2014
The Teaching Theatre is under construction adjacent to the expanded University Center. A project long-awaited by the University of Southern Indiana, crews broke ground on the Teaching Theatre in 2012.The new facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2014.
The proposed 350-seat facility will replace the 50-year-old off-campus theatre. The facility will attract additional students to the Theatre Arts Program and provide theatre majors with an even higher quality educational experience.
The Teaching Theatre is being constructed using locally-sourced and recycled materials. In addition, the theatre will include a sound baffle system with acoustic panels created with donated materials. It will have a thrust stage with additional staging areas incorporated into the walls, a shallow proscenium to allow for greater sightlines, exceptional natural acoustics and state-of-the-art light and sound technology.
The Teaching Theatre's red sandstone exterior is an homage to the Smithsonian Institution's Castle. Built in 1855, it is the oldest building on the National Mall.
