International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (E-Book)

The online International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (IESS), 2nd edition, contains 3,000 entries on social science topics such as political correctness, aging, cultural adaptation, and terrorism, and social science scholars such as mathematician John Nash. IESS is an e-book version of the nine-volume print encyclopedia of the same title, and builds on earlier editions of the encyclopedia published in 1935 and 1968. While its main focus is social sciences, IESS’ scope extends to psychology, philosophy of science, cultural studies, linguistics, religion, economics, and statistics. Scholars from around the world have contributed to the 2nd edition of IESS, including many Nobel Prize winners and historically marginalized group members. As all contributors were asked to write the entries for a readership of nonspecialists, the content in IESS is especially beneficial to college students.

How do I access the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences?

Users affiliated with USI (students, faculty, and staff members) can use IESS on campus or off, by following these steps:

When should I use the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences?
Use IESS if you have research question such as these:

  • Where can I find an overview of the concept “popular culture”?
  • What exactly is “political correctness”? Where did it originate?
  • What causes inequities in salaries? Is it race, gender, or something else?
  • I would like to read a good biography of John Nash, but I don’t want to read a whole book. Where should I look?

Search Tip!
IESS’ advanced search defaults to searching only the document title. If you receive no results with the “Document title” search, switch to the “Keyword” search and redo your search.
