Evansville African-American Community

This is a collection of photographs from the Charlotte Glover Moody, Charles Rochelle and the Alfred Porter Collections. The Moody collection has photographs from the 1920’s. Charlotte Moody’s father owned an exclusive barber shop in downtown Evansville. Mr. Porter’s images come from Lincoln High School and early photos of the Evansville A.M.E. Church from the 1950’s. Dr. Rochelle was a respected member of the community that helped bring better educational tools to the African-American community and Evansville. Also featured will be the Evansville Argus, a weekly newspaper produced by the community from 1938 to 1941. These provide rare glimpses into another time and place.

John Doane Collection

This collection featured images primarily from Mount Vernon, although it includes all of Posey County, and surrounding area.  John Doane was a lifelong resident of Mount Vernon and captured the area growth during the 1950s and 1960s.

Sonny Brown Collection

Sonny Brown is a resident of Evansville and retired from the Evansville Courier after 37 years as a staff photographer. Mr. Brown’s images have appeared in Life and the National Enquirer as well as publications in France and Germany. This collection is from the earlier years of his career in the 1950s through the 1970s.

The Flood of 1937

There are over a thousand images from the great flood of 1937. This collection has many scrap books and photographs from local residents documenting this historic event. It includes cities and towns outside Evansville such as Tell City and Mt. Vernon, Indiana and Owensboro, Kentucky. These are dramatic images of the devastating flood waters that reached over 53 feet.

Roy Kennedy Collection

This is a unique collection of photographs taken during the Great War, World War, 1914-1918. Many of the images were taken by the German photographer, Mr. Helling (Hellig), who was good friends with her father, Roy Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy served in World War I and gave this collection to his daughter, Barbara Blevins. Some of the images include a battlefield conditions, Franz Josef, Emperor Karl and Von Hindenburg.

Brad Awe Collection

This is anarchitectural collection featuring the historic district and downtown Evansville from 1978-79. Street shots of Main Street and view of the downtown skyline are just some of the images recorded by Brad Awe. Many landmarks and buildings in this collection have already disappeared from the landscape of the city.

The Evansville Argus

The Evansville Argus was a locally produced weekly newspaper by the Africa-American community in Evansville from June 25, 1938 until October 22, 1943. The Editor and founder of the Evansville Argus Publishing Company was J. Wendell Holder. The newspaper covered local, national and international news.

Don Blair Collection

The Blair collection is a photographic history of New Harmony and the surrounding area. It includes many photographs from the Fauntleroy family that date back to the 1880s. The collection range is from the 1880s to the 1950s. Some of the events in the collection are the building of the New Harmony bridge, visit of President Taft for the town’s centennial celebration, the tornado of 1925 and the devastation at Griffin, Indiana. The collection captures the everyday life in New Harmony and the changes through time of New Harmony, a jewel in southern Indiana.

Greg Smith Collection

Greg Smith is a retired photographer from the Evansville Press, a daily newspaper in Evansville that operated from 1906 until 1998 when it merged to become the Evansville Courier & Press. These images are from the 1970s through the 1980s.

Evansville Museum Photographic Collection

This is a collection of photographs from the Southern Indiana Gas & Electric Company (SIGECO) located in Evansville, Indiana. The photographs are of residential homes, businesses, employees, and other locations relating to SIGECO from the 1920’s through the 1950’s. The majority of the photographs are of the Evansville, Ind. area. The collection also includes other areas throughout Southern Indiana serviced by SIGECO.

Thomas Mueller Collection

This collection of photographs include many images from the 1940s and 1950s in Evansville and surrounding towns in Indiana like Petersburg, Orleans, and Rockport, as well as towns from Illinois and Kentucky such as McLeansboro, IL and Providence, KY. This collection has photographs from over 100 small towns in the tri-state area. It features many flood photographs from 1937. It also has a collection of images from Chicago and New Orleans from the 1900s.
