CALL NUMBER SYSTEMS

Library of Congress (LC) Classification
LC is most often used in university libraries. Rice Library uses LC call numbers on most materials, including the General Collection, located on floors 2-4.

Dewey Decimal Classification
Dewey call numbers are used to classify Rice Library’s DVDs, videos, CDs, and preK-12 materials (Curriculum Materials, 4th floor), which is mainly children’s books and textbooks used in classrooms. Dewey is most often used in public and school libraries.

Superintendent of Documents Numbers
Government documents are arranged by the issuing agency and/or department.
