Library Policies

Located on the Main Floor of the David L. Rice Library, the Reference Area houses the Reference Desk (464-1907), and the main Reference Collection. Reference Desk staff answer such questions as: How do I use the online catalog? Where are books with certain call numbers located? How do I find magazine articles on a topic? Reference Librarians are here to assist users with in-depth research as well.

The main Reference Collection includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, indexes, bibliographies, and atlases. Because these materials are needed for all library users, they may not be checked out. A very integral part of the collection are the electronic databases available through the library's web page. These databases include INSPIRE (Indiana's Virtual Library), CINAHL, Social Work Abstracts, BioOne, JSTOR, Facts.com, ABI/Inform, Britannica Online, and others.

Voyager, the Online Catalog
This integrated library system has a graphical user interface operating under Microsoft Windows or using a Web browser; it has graphical buttons, pull down menus, and point and click selection. Voyager is a client/server system with a relational database structure and Z39.50 and TCP/IP connectivity.

Internet Terminals
Students may surf the net for fun in the computer labs on the main floor. However, Internet terminals are located throughout the Reference Area and are to be used for research purposes only.

Microforms
Most of the library's newspaper and magazine backfiles are available in microfilm or microfiche. Ask at the Reference Desk for help, and bring dimes if you plan to make copies!

Pamphlet File
The Library has a collection of corporate annual reports and pamphlets on a variety of topics. A subject index of the file's contents is available on top of the file cabinets, and items may be checked out with your student ID.
