"In spring 2003, the NLN sent a questionnaire to the 1,459 schools that offer RN pre-licensure programs (associate degree, diploma and baccalaureate) to identify how the practices, methodologies, and strategies used in RN education programs changed in the previous five years and were expected to change in the next five years. Schools were asked to comment on the degree to which their emphasis on each of 187 items had changed from 1998 to 2003, and then to forecast what their emphasis on each of item would be 2008. The 187 items were clustered into the following areas: Curriculum, Teaching, Evaluation, Clinical/Laboratory, Faculty, and Students. Through 87 graphs, many of which show comparisons by program type, this Report provides data on items when 50 percent of the schools were in agreement about a trend. The most frequently recurring theme across five of the six major categories is the influence technology is having and will continue to have on the future of nursing education. Other trends are also noted and discussed. Six recommendations are presented."
