UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

(3rd Floor)

Archive hours are Monday - Friday 8:00am - Noon and 1:00pm - 4:30pm.

Located on the third floor of the David L. Rice Library, the collection consists of personal papers and business,
organizational, and governmental records including diaries and journals, correspondence, literary manuscripts,
art work, account books, minutes of business firms and organizations, scrapbooks and newsletters, photographs
and memorabilia.

When visiting the University Archives and Special Collections, please call ahead to inform us
of your research needs, so that we may better serve you.

  • Checkout Policy -
    Materials may not be checked out, but some items can be photocopied,
    depending on their condition.
  • Regional History -
    A collection of past and present materials of Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois
    which includes books, photographs, newspaper clippings, oral history interviews and newsletters.
  • Local Authors -
    Original manuscripts, proofs, galley sheets, and research materials comprise the collection of
    materials comprise the collection of materials from local authors. Among those represented
    are Kenneth McCutchan, Marilyn Durham, Darrel Bigham, and Ronald Roat.
  • Communal Studies Collections -
    The Communal Studies Collection contains information on historic and contemporary intentional
    communities. The collection includes primary and secondary materials on many historic and
    contemporary communities.
  • University Archives
    is made up of files, records, and documents produced by the University's offices.
  • Rare Books -
    The collection includes children's fiction and school texts, geology and natural history, the
    history of the Jewish people, movies and film.  Dating back to 1603, these books are first
    editions, signed by the author or of special interest to this region.
  • The Archives has a collection of materials on the History of USI.
  • The Archives has copies of all USI yearbooks that were published, 1971-1989.
  • The Archives has copies of student newspapers:
    • The Shield (1969 - present)
    • The Spartan Shield
    • The Roach (1966-1969)
