The University of Southern Indiana is awarding Megan N. Sanders one of four $1,000
Jenny Ann Memorial Scholarships.

Sanders is the daughter of Kenny and Lora Sanders and recently graduated from Shoals High School in Shoals, Indiana. She plans to major in radiology and use her degree to help people identify their medical needs.

“I’ve always been inspired to help others,” said Sanders. “My dad is a volunteer firefighter in my hometown, and now I can help people like he does.”

The Jenny Ann Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate of Shoals High School who is a full-time traditional student going into social work or a clinical program. The scholarship is renewable up to four years and can be used to buy books. Recipients obtain a book voucher that enables them to purchase $500 in books each semester.

The Jenny Ann Memorial Scholarship was established in 2004 by Janet Waggoner, a 1996 USI alumnus in social work, and her husband, Richard Yowell. Waggoner and Yowell established the scholarship in memory of Jenny Ann Wilson, daughter of Waggoner’s classmate and friend, Jean Wilson. Jenny Ann Wilson died in an automobile accident shortly after her eighth grade graduation, thereby losing the opportunity to attend college. The scholarship is primarily awarded to students who plan to major in social work at USI, but can be awarded to students going into related fields.

“I think Jenny would have wanted to use her degree to help others,” Sanders said. “This scholarship is making it possible for me to do that.”
