USI events commemorate Mandela's life and work

The University of Southern Indiana College of Liberal Arts and Multicultural Center host "Nelson Mandela's Life and Legacy" with two days of events, starting Wednesday, November 19, with a free screening of the film, "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" at 5 p.m. in Forum I in the Wright Administration Building.

On Thursday, December 4, there will be commemorative events all afternoon in the Wright Administration Building:

2:30 p.m. - Documentary screening: Mandela Biography, Forum III

3:30 p.m. - Art exhibit "What is the Color of Your Skin" by Dr. Joseph Uduehi, McCutchan Exhibition Space

5:30 p.m. - Opening reception for keynote address, food will be available, Forum II

6 p.m. - Keynote address "The Making of Nelson Mandela" by Dr. Alex Lichtenstein, professor of history at Indiana University, Forum II

Lichtenstein is an historian of the struggles for racial justice in societies shaped by white supremacy, particularly the southern United States and 20th century South Africa.

The keynote will be followed by a panel discussion with Lichtenstein; Dr. Michael Ndemanu, assistant professor of education; and Dr. Angela Batista, dean of students. Dr. Niharika Banerjea, assistant professor of sociology, will moderate the panel discussion.
