USI's The Edge Radio earns national accolades

February 23, 2015

Three students at the University of Southern Indiana's radio station, The Edge, have been recognized for their work in the Broadcast Education Association's Festival of Media Arts national competition.

The competition received over 1,300 entries from more than 150 universities and colleges, including some from overseas, in a variety of radio, video and film categories.

Clay Roth, a Radio and TV junior from Richland, Indiana, took first place in PSA, Promo and Commercial for his station promotional announcement "Let the Monster Out." Mike Cassidy, a Radio and TV junior from Jasper, Indiana, took third place in the same category with his station promotional announcement "The Local Edge."

In the Sports Category, USI sophomore Jevin Redman, a Marketing major and Radio and TV minor from Mt. Vernon, Indiana, won first place for his play-by-play of the USI vs. Shorter Men's Basketball game.

"These awards are truly earned by all three of these students," said John Morris, instructor of Radio and TV and faculty advisor to The Edge Radio. "They each have worked very hard to hone their skills. To have three people recognized in this prestigious competition is amazing. Having two awarded in the same category attests to the quality of work being produced by students at the radio station. The competition is very stiff, including schools such as the universities of Florida, Arizona, North Carolina and other well known schools."

USI has been recognized five times in the audio portion of the Festival of Media Arts over the past three years. No university or college has won more awards than USI in the Audio category over that time period.  The Edge also has excelled in other areas of the competition, winning a total of 15 Festival of Media Arts awards in the last five years.

The students will be recognized for their work at the Broadcast Education Association's National Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, in April.
