All-female mariachi band to headline music festival in New Harmony

September 24, 2015

The University of Southern Indiana/Historic New Harmony and Under the Beams present the second-annual Global Crossroads Culture and Music Festival from 1 to 7 p.m., Saturday, November 7, in New Harmony, Indiana.

With a focus on Latin culture, this daylong festival will include events all around the town of New Harmony such as: mural painting, Salsa and Tango workshop, free pop-up concerts, Latino issues panel discussion, food booths, special menus at local restaurants and a friendly soccer tournament.

Headlining the festival is Mariachi Flor de Toloache, New York City's first and only all-female mariachi band. Originally founded in 2008, the band provides an edgy, versatile and fresh take on traditional Mexican music.

The women of Mariachi Flor de Toloache, who have worked on collaborations with Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys, will be in concert at 7 p.m. at Murphy Auditorium in New Harmony. Tickets can be purchased at underthebeams.org.

Throughout the week, Mariachi Flor de Toloache will visit area schools to give workshops and concerts. The band will visit USI's campus at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4 to perform for students. They will complete the week visiting Signature School, Southridge Middle/High School Glenwood Leadership Academy and Mount Vernon Junior High School. Contact Historic New Harmony at 812-682-4488 for Mariachi Flor de Toloache's complete itinerary.
