SWI-AHEC announces recipients of 2015-16 Mini-Grants

Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (SWI-AHEC) has awarded more than $17,000 in funding to nine area tax-exempt organizations as part of its 2015-16 Mini-Grant Program.
"This amount represents an investment in our future," said Jane Friona, executive director of SWI-AHEC. "When you look at the entire health workforce pipeline - middle school, high school, undergraduate, graduate and professional levels - every step is important, and the educational resources we help provide to area institutions not only boosts interest in health careers and assists in education, but also ultimately improves healthcare in southwest Indiana."
The organizations receiving SWI-AHEC Mini-Grants are:
- Dare to Dream Mentoring Program, Evansville - to send students in grades 6-12 on a tour of five Historically Black Colleges and Universities with an emphasis on health careers.
- Heritage Hills High School, Lincoln City - for CPR instructor training and equipment for its Anatomy & Physiology curriculum.
- Jasper High School, Jasper - to purchase and repair microscopes for Project Lead the Way Biomedical Sciences curriculum.
- Medical Professions Academy, Central High School, Evansville - for Clinical Immersion Experience at Deaconess Hospital.
- St. Mary's Medical Center, Evansville - to record and archive the Perinatal Tri-State Conference so that the content will be available for later viewing by SWI-AHEC's targeted health professionals in rural and underserved communities.
- Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center, Evansville - for the creation of a professional resource library for Health Science students.
- Twin Rivers Health Science Program, Washington - for supplies and equipment to develop a unit on Sports Medicine and Athletic Training as part of its Anatomy & Health Science curriculum.
- University of Evansville's College of Education and Health Sciences - for its Caring for the Poor program to provide health screenings and health promotion activities to vulnerable populations.
- YWCA of Evansville - for a health careers camp targeting 7th and 8th grade girls in the Live Y'ers program.
Organizations in Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties that promote health careers for youth (6-12 grade), engage health professions students, or provide continuing education for health professionals in southwest Indiana were eligible to receive a mini-grant from the Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (SWI-AHEC).
SWI-AHEC stands for Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center. It began as a regional center in 2008, and it is hosted by the University of Southern Indiana in the College of Nursing and Health Professions.
SWI-AHEC is part of a national network with a mission to improve health by leading the nation in the recruitment, training and retention of a diverse health workforce for underserved communities.
