New Harmony Gallery hosting two ceramic art residents

January 28, 2016

The University of Southern Indiana's New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is hosting two artists in residence from January 16 through February 20 for a ceramics exhibition. The exhibition is free and open to the public. A closing reception will be held at the Gallery from 4-5 p.m. Saturday, February 20 prior to an Under the Beams concert featuring blues guitarist Ruthie Foster at 7:30 p.m. in Murphy Auditorium.

This exhibition showcases Jeremiah Ibarra and Anthony Treadway, the first artists in residence at the New Harmony Ceramics Residency. Artist housing and studio space in New Harmony is sponsored by the Robert Lee Blaffer Foundation. Living in New Harmony during their residency allows the artists to draw inspiration from the town of New Harmony.

"Recently, my thoughts are drawn towards routine," said Ibarra, who received his bachelor's degree from Angelo State University and his Master of Fine Arts from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi. "I wonder about the daily happenings we allow ourselves to experience. The Sarah Blaffer Potter's House and the town of New Harmony provide a brilliant atmosphere for exploration and growth."

The residency was organized by Lenny Dowhie, University of Southern Indiana professor emeritus of art, and provides studio time for the artists in the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Ceramics studio, adjacent to Philip Johnson's Roofless Church.

"The cultural and historic atmospheres are unique," said Treadway, who received his bachelor'sdegree from University of Evansville and his Master of Arts from Eastern Illinois University. "I visited here as a child, again in 1984 as a college student photographing the architectural elements of North Street, in 1985 and 1986 as ceramic student intern at the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Potter's House studio and now as a resident ceramic artist in the same studio. In fact, my wife and I moved here in October to make New Harmony our home."

This activity is made possible in part by support from the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.
