Hispanic Heritage Month event to feature community panel

September 20, 2016

The University of Southern Indiana Multicultural Center will host a panel discussion with local Hispanic business leaders and community members in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 22 in Carter Hall located in University Center West on the USI campus. The event is free and open to the public.

"Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate a culture full of diversity within our nation, and our panelists are just as diverse," said Cesar Berrios, program advisor for the USI Multicultural Center. "This is a time where students can hear and relate to our panelists so that they, too, can continue their education and create their own definition of success."

The group, which will speak on their personal experiences and their time in the Tri-State, includes: Brant Flores, board member of HOLA and owner of PMG Tree & Landscaping; Megan Alvarez, immigration attorney; Dr. Manuel Apodaca-Valdes, USI associate professor of Spanish; and Abraham Brown, owner of La Campirana restaurant and director of Latino ministry at Holy Name Church.

Other events planned for Hispanic Heritage Month include a Latin Dance Night at 6 p.m. Friday, September 30 and a presentation on the demographics of the Indiana Latino community at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 13.
