New Harmony gallery concludes Bicentennial celebration

September 28, 2016

The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art concludes its two-part series celebrating the Indiana Bicentennial with an exhibition by Indianapolis artist Casey Roberts. The exhibition is free and open to the public until November 5. A public closing reception will be held for the artist from 4 to 7 p.m. November 5.

Roberts creates his work with a Civil War-era photochemical process known as cyanotype. He experiments with different materials and finishes with added collage and painted elements.

"With everyday items such as baking soda, bleach and peroxide, I am able to achieve a range of colors and textures through controlled chemical reactions," said Roberts. "I repeat this process adding many layers until the image is fully realized, often finishing with watercolor painting or a collage element."

Jeremy Efroymson, New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art board member, selected Roberts to conclude the Bicentennial celebration. This exhibition supports the gallery's primary goals of creating dialogue and building connectivity within the region. The exhibition is made possible through the curation and support of the Efroymson Family Fund.

The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is a program within University of Southern Indiana Outreach and Engagement and is located at 506 Main Street in New Harmony, Indiana. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact Garry Holstein at 812-682-3156 or visit USI.edu/nhgallery.
