International artist and business owner brings exhibition of theater masks to New Harmony

January 18, 2017

The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is hosting international artist and business owner Jonathan Becker for an exhibition of theater masks. The exhibition is free and open to the public until February 18, 2017.

Becker will also join the gallery for a closing reception to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, February 18th, before the Under the Beams concert featuring Corky Siegel and Chamber Blues.

Jonathan Becker began sculpting masks in 1986 while a student in Paris, France and founded his company, theater-masks.com, when he returned to the United States. Becker has created hundreds of masks for theatre companies, producing organizations and individual artists in over 40 countries. His clients include Disney Theatrical in association with The Lion King, Focus Films, NBC, The Bravo Cable Network, Theater of Enchantment in Philadelphia and university and high school theater departments across the United States. Becker is currently assistant professor of Movement and Acting at Ball State University.

"This exhibition reflects the curatorial strategies of the Gallery," said Garry Holstein, director. "All shows are selected based on the three primary goals of providing opportunity, the creation of dialogue and building connectivity within the region."

This exhibit is made possible with support from the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is a program within University of Southern Indiana Outreach and Engagement and is located at 506 Main Street in New Harmony, Indiana. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact Garry Holstein at 812-682-3156 or visit USI.edu/nhgallery.
