Program at USI honors eight ‘phenomenal women’

Eight women, including three USI students and a professor, were honored March 26 at the 2003 Phenomenal Women of USI and the Community Recognition Program on the University of Southern Indiana campus. From a field of nearly 25 nominees, the honorees were selected for making an impact on the lives of people in the community, serving as role models for young women, or playing a role in history. Awards were given in three categories: USI student, community-at-large, and posthumous memorial. The award subcategories included leadership, community service, health and science, education, business, the arts, and home and family. 2003 Honorees USI Students Senior Stephanie Betz (Leadership) A member of the Activities Programming Board, Student Alumni Association, Social Work Club, Peers Assisting with Life Skills Program, and the Newman Catholic Student Organization, Betz also is a valued member of the Religious Life Office. She is active in her local Catholic Church and is a member of Alpha Chi Honor Society and Golden Key International Honor Society. A dean’s list student, Betz received the USI Scholastic Excellence Award. Graduate student Holly Dunn (Community Service) Dunn is a volunteer sexual assault advocate for the Albion Fellows Bacon Center and an advocate of safety awareness. Earlier this month, Dunn presented a monologue she wrote in the Albion Fellows’ benefit performance of The Vagina Monologues, assisted in the training of Kentucky circuit court judges, and served as keynote speaker for the American Red Cross Heroes Dinner. Senior Dawn Dycus (Health and Science) For the past two years, Dycus has volunteered as Theme Living coordinator in the Science Wing of O’Bannon Residence Hall. She is a member of Sigma Zeta, the honorary science and mathematics society, which she serves as volunteer historian. She also works as a patient care associate at Deaconess Hospital and in the microbiology laboratory on the USI campus. She received the Baccalaureate/Doctor of Medicine Scholarship and plans to attend medical school. Community-at-Large Sara Davies (Leadership) The former executive director of Leadership Evansville Inc., Davies now serves the organization as a consultant. She also is an Evansville Housing Authority commissioner, chair of Our Greater Community, and chair of the Citizens Commission for the Future of Indiana Courts in addition to being a member of the USI Foundation Board, Evansville Downtown Rotary, and the American Bar Association Council on Legal Education. Shirley James (Community Service) The founder of the Westside Improvement Association, James also helped establish the Youth Service Bureau, championed preservation of the Howell Wetlands, and is chair of the Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage Advisory Board. She was appointed to serve on the Governor’s Task Force for Public Access and Open Door Policy, and served on the Board of Directors of Our Greater Community. She also served on the Board of Directors of Operation City Beautiful. Dr. Eva Jermakowicz, associate professor of accounting (Education) An international instructor as well as an accountant, Jermakowicz began her career as instructor to the senior instructor at Warsaw Technical University in Poland, where she was later promoted to assistant professor. After immigrating to the United States, she became an assistant professor of business in 1987. Now an associate professor of accounting, she has served as faculty chair of the School of Business, which she now serves as faculty secretary. Kristen Tucker (Business) A USI alumna, Tucker and her husband founded Tucker Publishing Group in 1999. The company now has more than 10 employees and produces four magazines: Evansville Living, Evansville Business, Flavors, and City View. Tucker also serves on the YWCA and ANEW boards of directors and the American Red Cross Capital Campaign Marketing Committee. She holds an M.A.L.S. from USI, where her Capstone project was the published book, Main Street, Evansville, Ind.: A 70-year perspective. Posthumous Memorial Sherry Crawford (Education) A USI alumna, Crawford began her career as a singer/entertainer but later felt called to become an educator. While writing movie reviews for the Evansville Courier & Press, she completed a bachelor’s at University of Evansville and earned a master’s at USI. She was an English instructor at Ivy Tech State College, and when the Community College of Indiana formed, she accepted the administrative role of coordinator. Crawford, 54, died February 21, 2003. The 2003 Phenomenal Women of USI and the Community Recognition Program was presented by the USI Multicultural Center and the Evansville Chapter of the American Association of University Women.
