Studs Terkel’s American Dreams, directed by Scott LaFeber, will be the final production of the 2002-03 University of Southern Indiana Theatre season. Performances will begin April 2 and run through April 13 at the USI Theatre on Igleheart Avenue.

American Dreams is a series of monologues based on real interviews between the playwright and Americans. The characters in the show include flower children, National Rifle Association radicals, and everyday citizens. Each character gives his interpretation of the American dream. Together these ideals form the intricate quilt that is America. LaFeber’s major theme of the show is the paradoxical and contradictory nature of the human condition as exemplified in the American spirit.

Senior theatre student, Joe Ciresi, plays two of the characters in the spring production.

“The best part of the show is that you can put yourself into any one of these characters’ situations. They’re all just people like us going through day-to-day trials and tribulations,” Ciresi said.

Most main stage productions are a combination of student and faculty talents. This production is special because it is almost completely student designed. Costumes are the only aspect not designed by the students, but students will construct them.

The set design, by senior Kyle Andres, will reflect the themes of the show including America, diversity, and perceptions of the American dream. Andres’ design will include several scrims showing projections that represent those perceptions. The floor of the stage will be painted to look like an American quilt to represent the diversity of our nation, and American flags will be a constant theme throughout the design.

Performance times for the show are April 2, 3, 9, 10 at 7 p.m.; April 4, 5, 11, 12 at 8 p.m.; and April 13 at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $9 for adults; $7 seniors and non-USI students; and $3 for USI students with valid Eagle Access cards. All performances are at the USI Theatre located at 3001 Igleheart Ave. Call 812/422-3970 to purchase tickets.
