USI Greek members receive awards

USI fraternities and sororities were honored for service and scholarship during the Greek Awards ceremony on April 22. Andrea Miller of Delta Zeta received the Outstanding New Member Award for her work with the chapter, the USI campus, and the Greek community. Miller is a Presidential Scholar, a student ambassador, and a member of her chapter’s executive board. Ryan Foncannon of Phi Delta Theta received the Greek Unity Award for his commitment to furthering the Greek community through dedication, leadership, and overall morale. Jim Browning, director of counseling and advisor for Lambda Chi Alpha, received the Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award for guiding and inspiring the chapter members to become better individuals. The Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award was given to Michael Slavkin, assistant professor of education and advisor for Tau Kappa Epsilon. The award is based on the influences and guidance the faculty advisor has had in connection with the University, the chapter, and the Greek community. The Outstanding Chapter President Award recognizes a chapter president who shows leadership, guidance, and brotherhood/sisterhood throughout their chapter, the Greek community, and the USI campus. This year’s recipient is Ryan Miles, Tau Kappa Epsilon. The Greek Man and Greek Woman of the Year Awards recognize one man and one woman who portray the high ideals of fraternity and sorority life and show excellence in scholarship, community service, campus involvement, and brotherhood/sisterhood. The Greek Man of the Year is Jeremy Clifford, Tau Kappa Epsilon and the Greek Woman of the Year is Erin Hutton, Gamma Phi Beta. Overall Chapter Excellence Awards are based on value and identity, organizational management, scholarship, recruitment and retention, membership education, financial management, community service, alumni relations, campus and community relations, and international and national relations. Points are given based on “meets requirements” and “fails to meet requirement” scale. The 2003 Overall Chapter Excellence for Fraternities award went to Tau Kappa Epsilon; and the 2003 Overall Chapter Excellence for Sororities was awarded to Gamma Phi Beta. Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity earned Gold Achievement for achieving 80 percent and above of total points. Delta Zeta Sorority and Phi Delta Theta Fraternity earned Silver Achievement for achieving 70 to 79 percent of total points. The Bronze Achievement is awarded to any chapter achieving 60 to 69 percent of total points. This year’s winner is Alpha Sigma Sorority. Lambda Chi Alpha received the Highest Fraternity GPA for spring 2002 with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.760. Gamma Phi Beta, with a cumulative GPA of 3.181 was the Highest Sorority GPA for spring 2002. The Highest Fraternity GPA for fall 2002 went to Kappa Alpha Order with a cumulative GPA of 3.017. The Highest Sorority GPA for fall 2002 went to Delta Sigma Theta with a cumulative GPA of 3.313.
