USI program exploring positive psychology
|
University of Southern Indiana will present “Is the Glass Half Full or Half Empty? Pragmatism and Positive Psychology,” a Community of Scholars Lecture featuring Dr. James Pawelski of Vanderbilt University, Wednesday, April 30. The program will begin at 4 p.m. in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center. It is free and open to the public. An assistant professor of human and organizational development, and religious studies, Pawelski has published and presented in the areas of positive psychology, character development, ethical decision-making, and compassionate choice. “There are at least two ways to try to make the world a better place,” Pawelski said. “The first is to decrease the bad things in it; the second is to increase the good. Positive psychology points out that mainstream psychology uses the former strategy and claims that there is much promise in the exploration and implementation of the second strategy.” His presentation at USI will consider the questions: What is positive psychology? Is it correct in its claim? What benefits might follow if it is, and what dangers might appear? Pawelski received a Ph.D. in philosophy from Penn State University in 1997.
