SGA taps those who bring recognition to campus
|
USI President H. Ray Hoops, alumnus Russ Stilwell ’77, and Delta Zeta sorority received Spirit of the Eagle awards during the Student Leadership Awards and Reception ceremony held in April. The awards, presented by the Student Government Association (SGA), honor those who bring local, regional, national, and international recognition to USI. The 34 students who were called to active military duty the spring also were recognized with a Spirit of the Eagle plaque that will hang in the University Center under the U.S. flag. The SGA honored Dr. Hoops for his love for USI and its students, faculty, staff, and administrators. They recognized his efforts to get approval of the engineering degree and for his work with national and state higher education associations. The SGA recognized Stilwell for his work as majority leader of the Indiana House of Representatives. The organization award was given to Delta Zeta sorority for being the number one chapter in the nation for raising $5,000 for the Speech and Hearing Impaired, the sorority’s philanthropy, and for their community service. The SGA also recognized outstanding members of the faculty, staff, and administration. Jeanne Barnett, professor of biology, is this year’s Faculty Member of the Year. A student writing in support of her nomination said Barnett “does more for students than any professor I have encountered on this campus.” Other said she always has her door open for students, is the advisor for Sigma Zeta, and holds practice tests on Saturday afternoons for students about to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). The Staff Member of the Year is Margaret Flewallen, University Center supervisor. Students said Margaret deserves recognition for her positive attitude that leaves students with smiles on their faces. A student worker said, “She is more than a boss to all of us, she is like a mom.” Dr. Robert Parrent, vice president for Student Affairs, is this year’s Administrator of the Year. Students said, “Dr. Parrent has enhanced all areas of Student Affairs in the year he has been at USI. He seeks opportunities and finds a way to seize them no matter how impossible the task may seem.” |
