Dr. James L. Cooper, a nationally known expert on historic iron and concrete bridges, will deliver a program entitled “The Great River Bridges of the Lower Wabash” at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 12 in Thrall’s Opera House in New Harmony, Indiana.

The program will address some of the preservation issues facing the White County Bridge Commission in their effort to preserve the historic White County toll bridge, which was completed in 1930. Cooper will focus on the function and preservation of the White County bridge in the context of other toll bridges along the Wabash River between Indiana and Illinois.

Dr. Cooper, emeritus professor of history at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, has published two books on historic bridges in Indiana and has edited and contributed to two others. He is a member of the advisory panel for a National Historic Bridge Program with the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C., serves as chair of the Indiana Historic Bridge Committee, and served as director of the Historic Architectural and Engineering Record Bridge Inventory in Indiana from 1980-1991. In 1996, Cooper received the Wilbur D. Peat Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Understanding and Appreciation of Indiana’s Architectural Heritage.

The program is in recognition of National Historic Preservation Week, and it is free and open to the public.
