The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and the 2003 Lincoln Amphitheatre cast will present the second annual Celebrate America concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 25 at Lincoln Amphitheatre in Lincoln State Park.

Audiences will hear the professional musicians playing some of America’s most beloved music in a historic setting, and the Lincoln cast will sing selections such as If I Were a Rich Man, Match Maker, and Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof, this season’s featured musical.

This year’s concert will include selections from American Salute, Star Spangled Banner, Armed Forces Salute, Battle Hymn of the Republic, God Bless America, and Lincoln Portrait. Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard of the Indiana Supreme Court will serve as narrator for Aaron Copland’s classic, Lincoln Portrait.

Fiddler on the Roof soloists are Kim Saltarelli, Michael Tourek, and Richard Gammon, all members of the 2003 Lincoln Amphitheatre cast.

Christopher Stewart, winner of the 2003 EPO Young Artists Competition, will be the featured violinist for Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnol, Op. 21 I. Allegro non troppo. Randy Moore of FOX 7 will serve as master of ceremonies.

Alfred Savia will conduct the orchestra and soloists. Savia is the music director of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra.

Savia said, “Last year’s concert at Lincoln Amphitheatre was a perfect setting for a Memorial Day weekend concert. Set in the beautiful Lincoln State Park where Abraham Lincoln grew to manhood, it was an inspiration to perform patriotic music such as Lincoln Portrait. And, of course, having Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard as narrator of the piece this year will be an added bonus.”

Dr. Iain Crawford, dean of USI School of Liberal Arts and co-producer of Lincoln Amphitheatre, is excited that the concert will return for a second year.

Crawford said, “One year ago, we introduced the Amphitheatre audience to the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. Following the enormous success of that concert, we’re delighted to welcome the orchestra back in 2003 for an evening of patriotic music here at Lincoln’s childhood home. The Celebrate America concert is a grand way to celebrate our nation, the beginning of summer, and the opening of the Lincoln Amphitheatre season.

Celebrate America is sponsored by OFS The Office Furniture Division of Styline Industries, Inc., Perry-Spencer Communications, Inc., David E. Price and Associates, Fox 7, and WKDQ. It is produced by the University of Southern Indiana.

Tickets to the concert are on sale now at the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra ticket office, 812/425-5050. Ticket prices are $15 and $25 for adults and $5 for children.

Lincoln Amphitheatre is located in Lincoln State Park in Spencer County (Lincoln City, Indiana). The amphitheatre is completely covered, so no rainouts. Visitors have called it one of the most beautiful stages in the nation.

Established to tell the story of Abraham Lincoln’s childhood and young adult years in Indiana, the Lincoln Amphitheatre will stage the musical historical drama, Young Abe Lincoln, opening on Friday June 27, and the musical Fiddler on the Roof, opening on Friday, July 11.
