Alumni honored four individuals

A faculty member, a civic leader, and two alumni were recognized as University of Southern Indiana Alumni Association award recipients at the Class of 2003 dinner on May 10. Jane Davis-Brezette, chair of the Physical Education Department, received the Faculty Recognition Award. Davis-Brezette has been teaching at USI since 1970, and she has been responsible for shaping the University’s physical education major. Each semester she advises 60+ students and teaches core curriculum and major-level classes. She extends her leadership to professional organizations. She is past president of the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, and since1999, she has been a member of the representative assembly for American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. The Special Recognition Award was presented to James L. Will Sr., who has been serving USI for three decades. He is a member of the USI Board of Trustees, and he was chair of the board from 1999-2002. He helped found the Varsity Club and served as the president in 1977-78. He also lends leadership to Athletics Coaches Club, USI Foundation Board of Dirctors, the USI/New Harmony Foundation Board, and Southern Indiana Higher Education Board. The Alumni Service Award was presented to Tina M. Kern-Raibley, a 1986 USI graduate. She serves as the alumni representative to the USI Board of Trustees. During her tenure on the board, she has served as secretary, vice chair of the board, and chair of the Finance Committee. Currently she is a member of the Construction and Finance Committee for the board. She also shares her leadership skills with the USI Alumni Association, president 1987-88, and the USI Foundation, serving on committees for the USI Phonathon, Campaign USI, and the corporate and friends campaigns for the USI Annual Fund. Daniel S. Hermann, a 1979 USI graduate, received the Distinguished Alumni Award. This award recognizes a graduate who has made outstanding achievements in a career or in public service. This year’s recipient has distinguished himself as a corporate executive in the coal industry. He is the president and chief operating officer of Black Beauty Coal Company and Black Beauty Resources, Inc. His USI involvement includes being a member of the USI School of Business Board of Visitors and past chairman and member of the USI Accounting Circle. An active member of the community, Hermann serves as director and past president of the Boys and Girls Club, a director of Fifth Third Bank, director of Evansville Regional Business Committee, and former WNIN public television director. Members of the Class of 2003 were special guests of the Alumni Association at the dinner. The Class of 2003, with over 1,400 members, graduated on May 11. |
