USI program focusing on children, communities

University of Southern Indiana will present “The Collaborative Effort Behind Every Child’s Race for the Future” July 30-31 in the University Center on campus.

The conference for educators, school nurses, civic and business leaders, social service agencies, and others concerned about children and families will provide proven practices to enrich the lives of students, teachers, school staff, and communities surrounding schools.

It also will include presentations by experts in the field of full-service community schools. A list of the featured speakers follows:

· Joy G. Dryfoos, independent consultant and writer partially supported by the Carnegie Corp., co-author of Inside Full Service Community Schools

· John “Jody” Kretzmann, co-director of the Asset-Based Community Development Institute at the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University

· Sue Maguire, principal of Molly Stark School in Bennington, Vt., who led Molly Stark’s transformation to a full-service community school; co-author of Inside Full Service Community Schools

· Jane Riley, executive director of Communities in Schools of Charleston, S.C., a stay-in-school/dropout prevention community-based nonprofit organization

· Joseph P. Riley Jr., mayor of Charleston, S.C., considered one of the most visionary governmental leaders in America, he created the Mayor’s Office for Children, Youth, and Families

The registration fee is $100 by Tuesday, July 1, or $125 thereafter. Continuing education credit is available.
