Disc golf scrambles on Wednesdays
|
A weekly disc golf two-player scramble will be held on Wednesday evenings at the Screaming Eagle Valley Complex at the University of Southern Indiana through August 20. There will be an adult division (men, women, and co-ed) and a junior division for children 12 and under. The scrambles will begin at 6 p.m. each Wednesday, with registration at 5:45 p.m.. Prizes will include dinners at local restaurants, food coupons, and t-shirts. The cost is $1 per person per week. It will be a random draw two-player scramble. Driver discs will be available for those needing them. Each participant can attend the awards ceremony, which will include free refreshments. The disc golf course at USI opened in the spring. Disc golf, which offers the fresh air and green surroundings of golf, is the art of tossing Frisbee-like discs into metal baskets called targets. The object of disc golf is to complete the course with the lowest number of “strokes” or throws. The baskets have chains that work like the backboard of a basketball hoop to stop and guide the flight of the disc. The USI course consists of 18 such baskets or “holes” placed along the course. There is a front nine and a back nine. The shorter holes are under 300 feet in length and two holes are 400+ feet. Ruth Waller, USI director of intramurals, said the disc golf course was created to provide recreational opportunities for USI students, employees, and the community. The scramble will offer an opportunity to play disc golf in a competitive environment. The disc golf scramble is being organized by USI Intramural Recreational Sports. Sponsors are Southwest Graphics, Texas Roadhouse, and Hacienda Mexican Restaurants. |
