Musical to end New Harmony Theatre Season

Tony Award- winning musical to round out New Harmony Theatre’s 2003 season. The New Harmony Theatre will end its 16th season with a rollicking musical that won two Tony Awards. A Day in Hollywood/ A Night in the Ukraine includes a first act that is a funny and nostalgic spoof of 1930s movies. The second act is the comedy the Marx Brothers didn’t make, but could have. A Day in Hollywood/ A Night in the Ukraine opens Friday, August 1 and runs Thursday through Sunday until August 17. The show begins in the lobby of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre where six members of the ushering staff sing a musical tribute to the screen stars and productions of that era. The second act is set in the stately mansion of Mrs. Pavlenko, a wealthy Ukrainian widow. The same talented cast fills the roles for both acts of the musical. Jeffrey Johnson, originally from Evansville and a graduate of Reitz High School, will play the role of Samovar. He has been on Broadway in Senator Joe, Eastern Standard, and The Three Musketeers. He also has been on national tour with Einstein on the Beach, The Cave, and A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine. Larry Daggett will play Carlo. Daggett has Broadway credits with Ragtime and National Tour credits with Some Enchanted Evening. Noreen MacDonald will portray Mrs. Pavalenko. She has performed in Europe in Crazy For You and has a been on the national tour of Singin’ in the Rain. The role of Nina will be portrayed by Whitney Webster. Webster was in the original Broadway cast of A Christmas Carol. She has also been in national and Broadway tours, including Showboat and My Fair Lady. Amanda Whitford will portray the legendary Harpo. She has been seen in The Glass Blowers, George M!, and S’Wonderful all in New York. Jeff Williams will play the role of Constantine. This is Williams second season at NHT. He was also in NHT’s production of Cole Porter’s You Never Know. He also has been in A Christmas Carol and The Music Man on Broadway. Christina E. Johnson will play Sascha. She has done regional work with The Lost Colony and Atlanta Ballet. She also performed in a Super Bowl half-time show. Edgar Contreras rounds out the cast playing the role of Masha. Contreras has done regional work at The Shawnee Playhouse including My Fair Lady and Footloose. He has also performed at Pioneer Amphitheatre. A Day in Hollywood/ A Night in the Ukraine will run August 1 through 17, Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors and students, and $19 for groups of 20 or more. The New Harmony Theatre is produced by University of Southern Indiana and is generously supported by the Indiana Arts Commission, The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana, and the National Endowment for the Arts. |
