Founders Day honoring eight USI employees

University of Southern Indiana will host its annual Founders Day Reception, a tribute to employees with 25 years of service to the University, at 3 p.m. Monday, September 15, in the University Center’s Carter Hall “University of Southern Indiana is fortunate to have so many dedicated employees of long tenure. These individuals help the University retain its student-centered culture and values as the institution grows,” said USI President H. Ray Hoops. Presented by Faculty Senate and Staff Council, the event also will recognize the Board of Southern Indiana Higher Education Inc. for its role in establishing the University. “The recognition of Southern Indiana Higher Education and its vision for public higher education in southern Indiana is long overdue,” Hoops said. “USI’s beautiful environment and handsome physical plant really evolved from the dreams of these men and women who are among our most important founders.” Founders Day’s employee honorees Deborah L. Carl ’73, ’76 Assistant professor, program director of Dental Hygiene Carl joined the University as an instructor and acting supervisor of Dental Hygiene November 15, 1978, after previously working on campus as an instructor in dental hygiene and adjunct clinic faculty member. The Evansville resident received a USI Faculty Research and Creative Work Award in 1993 and a USI Alumni Association Faculty Recognition Award in 1992. She belongs to Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society; Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society; the American Dental Education Association, which she served as chair of the Standing Committee of Allied Dental Program Directors 2001-02; the Indiana Dental Hygiene Educators Association; the American Dental Hygienists’ Association; the Indiana Dental Hygienists’ Association; and the Ohio Valley Dental Hygienists’ Association, which she served as president 1982-83, 1987-88, and 1996-97. She holds a master’s in education from Indiana State University, and an associate degree in dental hygiene and a bachelor’s in dental hygiene education from USI. Dr. Sherry B. Darrell Professor of English Darrell joined the University as a part-time assistant professor of English in 1975 and became full-time August 21, 1978. She also has served USI as Academic Skills coordinator, Honors Day coordinator, and inauguration writer as well as founding sponsor of Alpha Chi Honorary. The Owensboro resident is the recipient of a Faculty Research and Creative Work Grant, an Alumni Association Faculty Recognition Award, a Kentucky Women’s Foundation Grant, and a National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar in Greek tragedy at Dartmouth College. She is an active writer and board member for Hospice and Palliative Care of the Ohio Valley in Owensboro and teaches an adult Sunday school class with her husband at Trinity United Methodist Church in Evansville. Darrell holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from George Peabody College for Teachers, Vanderbilt University; and a B.A. in English and philosophy from McMurry College. Leonard E. Dowhie Professor of art Dowhie joined the University as an assistant professor of art August 21, 1978. He also has served USI as chair of the Art, Music, and Theatre Department. A resident of St. Philips, Ind., he is trustee emeritus of the American Craft Council in New York City, fellow to the council of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, and a partner in Expression of Culture, producers of SOFA Art Expos in Chicago and New York. His artwork is displayed in many museums, including the Smithsonian Institute’s Renwick Gallery. Dowhie holds an M.F.A. from Indiana State University and a B.A.E. from Arizona State University. Stephen P. Helfrich Director of Facilities Operation and Planning, Physical Plant Helfrich joined the University as campus engineer July 1, 1978. He also has served USI as assistant director of the Physical Plant. The Evansville resident is chair of the USI Space Committee and a member of the North Central Accreditation Committee. A longtime member of the USI Varsity Club, Helfrich also represents the University on the Evansville Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee. He holds a B.S. in industrial management from Purdue University. Phyllis A. Maddox ’74, ’75 Assistant professor of dental hygiene Maddox joined the University as an instructor in dental hygiene August 1, 1978, after working as a dental hygienist for Dr. Robert Maxedon. The Evansville resident is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society; Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society; the Ohio Valley Dental Hygienists’ Association, which she served as president; the Indiana Dental Hygienists’ Association, which she served on the board of trustees; the American Dental Hygienists’ Association; and the Indiana Dental Hygiene Educators Association. She is a recipient of the USI Alumni Association Faculty Recognition Award and holds a master’s in education from Indiana State University, and an associate degree in dental hygiene and B.S. in dental hygiene education from USI. Mary L. McGrew Senior administrative assistant, School of Business McGrew joined the University as a secretary I April 12, 1978. She also has worked on campus as an intermediate secretary and office assistant. She served on Staff Council for six years; is a member of the Secretaries and Associates Club, in which she has held a variety of offices; and has donated her time to volunteer at USI basketball games for many years. A resident of Posey County, she attended Lockyear’s Business College. Dr. C.W. Stegemoller Associate professor of mathematics Stegemoller joined the University as an associate professor of mathematics August 21, 1978. The Newburgh resident also has served USI as the men’s cross country coach. Under his leadership the team qualified for nine consecutive GLVC championships and finished third and fifth in NCAA championships. He was named NCAA II Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1982 and holds a D.A. in mathematics from Idaho State University. Gina R. Walker Library associate, archivist Walker joined the University as a clerk in the Library Acquisitions Department February 6, 1978. She also worked the Reference Desk and as an interlibrary loan clerk on campus. The Winslow, Ind., resident is treasurer and Web-site editor for the Communal Studies Association and is president of the USI Secretaries and Associates Club. She holds a B.A. in English from Indiana State University. |
