Chemistry section gets national award
|
The Indiana Kentucky Border Section of the American Chemical Society, with leadership from the University of Southern Indiana Department of Chemistry, won two national awards during recent competition. The two awards are the “Best Local Section” in the small section category and the “Best Section Interaction with a Student Affiliate Chapter.” Dr. Marie Hankins, chair of the Department of Chemistry, said, “the outstanding local section award is extremely competitive among sections of similar size. We competed with local sections in places like Chicago and New York. Some of these sections have more people, but we are able to be competitive because a few people work so hard.” She added, “We’ve been trying for the outstanding local section for a long time. We are very proud of it.” The local chapter sponsors educational activities for National Chemistry Week, observed October 19 to October 25 this year, and career assistance programs for USI students that include mock interviews and awareness of careers in chemistry. The local American Chemical Society chapter has 250 members. |
