The University of Southern Indiana recently welcomed 72 new students into its Honors Program this fall. The new scholars join 183 continuing Honors students, bringing the overall total to 255 students.
The Honors Program curriculum offers the chance to supplement a student’s educational experience within any of the University’s fields of study. Honors classes are commonly smaller in size, providing increased discussion, interaction, and student growth. Students who have earned an SAT score of 1200 or ACT composite of 27 or higher are automatically accepted into the Honors Program. Other interested students are encouraged to apply. Upon completion of the program, a distinction of University Honors Scholar is noted on the diploma and transcript.
The Honors Student Council officers for 2003-2004 are: Laryn Adams, president; Rachel Miller, historian; and Erin Ward, secretary/treasurer. Other council members at large include Maggie Poitras, Jason Gries, Matthew Mazalouskas, and Sarah Weinzapfel.

The council hosts an annual public policy forum. The 2003 topic “Racial and Ethnic Tensions: How to Best Achieve True Equality?” will be discussed Tuesday, December 9, 7 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium. Other activities include a fall and winter party, as well as monthly general assembly meetings.

The new honors students are from various Indiana and Illinois cities and include the following:
