USI CommUNITY Month through November 12

THREADS, University of Southern Indiana’s first campus-wide diversity initiative, will celebrate CommUNITY Month beginning Wednesday, October 15, with events continuing through November 12 on campus. Special activities during the month will focus on the USI Creed and disability, homelessness, and Native American awareness. All the events are free. A schedule follows: · October 15 – CommUNITY Month Kick-off Reception, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Multicultural Center. Sponsor: Multicultural Center. USI community invited. · October 16 - Box City, raising awareness of the plight of homelessness with Ann Ennis, Habitat of Evansville, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. October 17, McDonald West Recreation Room. Sponsors: Student Housing Association, USI Habitat for Humanity, and Religious Life. USI community invited. · October 22 – Disability Culture Rap, noon to 1 p.m., University Center, Carter Hall. Sponsor: Multicultural Center. Open to the public. · October 23 – “The Quiet Survival of Utopian Communities Today,” presented by Dr. Timothy Miller, professor of religious studies, University of Kansas, 3:30 p.m., Mitchell Auditorium, Health Professions Center. Sponsor: Center for Communal Studies. Open to the public. · October 24 – “Researching and Publishing about Modern Communes,” presented by Dr. Timothy Miller, professor of religious studies, University of Kansas, 10 a.m., Room 1004 in the Liberal Arts Center. Sponsor: Center for Communal Studies. Open to the public. · October 24 – “The Cutting Edge of Utopian Communities: Eco-Villages and Co-housing, presented by Dr. Timothy Miller, professor of religious studies, University of Kansas, noon, Forum I, Wright Administration Building. Sponsor: Center for Communal Studies. Open to the public. · October 25 – USI Women Build Habitat Day, 8 a.m. to noon and noon to 4 p.m., location TBA. Sponsor: USI Alumni Association. · November 5 – “What is a Real Indian?” panel discussion, 6 p.m., Mitchell Auditorium, Health Professions Center. Sponsors: Muticultural Center and American Indian Center of Indiana Inc. Open to the public. · November 12 – “On the Road with Angel Mounds,” presented by Mike Linderman, property manager of Angel Mounds, 6 p.m., rooms 201-202 in the University Center.
