Conference examining mind’s healing power

A medical scientist, psychologist, and best-selling author will be the featured speaker at “The Power of the Mind to Heal: Psychoneuroimmunology to Energy Medicine” November 14 at University of Southern Indiana. The conference featuring Dr. Joan Borysenko will be held from 8 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. in Carter Hall in the University Center. Combining science, medicine, psychology, and spirituality, Borysenko’s interests include behavioral medicine, stress and well-being, psychoneuroimmunology, women’s health, creativity, and the great spiritual traditions of the world. She holds a doctorate in medical sciences from Harvard Medical School, where she also completed post-doctoral fellowships in experimental pathology, behavioral medicine, and psychoneuroimmunology, and was an instructor in medicine until 1988. A licensed psychologist, she is cofounder and former director of the Mind-Body clinical programs at two Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals. Her work with those programs is the foundation of her 1987 New York Times bestseller, Minding the Body, Mending the Mind. Borysenko has appeared on Oprah, Hour Magazine, and Good Morning American, and her work has been featured in U.S. News and World Report, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Reader’s Digest, Success, Bottom Line, American Health, Glamour, Vogue, Ladies Home Journal, Living Fit, and many other publications. Mary MacGregor, M.S., an Evansville psychotherapist; Helen Emge Shymanski, B.A., C.Y.I., an area yoga instructor; and Mary Beth Davis, R.N., holistic specialist at Deaconess Hospital, will lead the concurrent sessions following Borysenko’s presentation. The USI School of Nursing and Health Professions and the Greater Evansville Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation are sponsoring the conference. Registration is $30 until Friday, October 31, and $40 thereafter. Registration for full-time students is $10. The fee includes refreshments, lunch, and materials.
