Week highlighting international education

University of Southern Indiana International Programs and Services will host six events on campus November 17-21 in conjunction with International Education Week. “This is actually a national program, and the Department of State and Department of Education cosponsor the initiative,” said Heidi Gregori-Gahan, director of USI International Programs and Services. “The goal of the program is to raise awareness on the part of U.S. citizens about the world and also to interest international students and others from overseas in American culture.” International Education Week November 17 - The Basics of Buddhism, featuring Mary MacGregor, Buddhist teacher, noon to 1 p.m., USI, University Center, Carter Hall. Sponsors: USI Religious Life, the Multicultural Center, and International Programs and Services. The event also is part of Religious Awareness Month. Free and open to the public. November 18 – Program for Community Youth, presented in cooperation with College Mentors for Kids, 3 p.m., USI, University Center. The event will introduce area youth to USI international students, who will share information about their countries and cultures. The event is by invitation only. November 18 – Global Community’s German Night, 7:30 p.m., USI, Governors Hall lounge. International students from Germany will share information about their country and culture. German refreshments also will be served. Free and open to the public. November 19 – International Gifts Sale, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., USI, University Center. Gift and craft items created in Third World countries will be available with proceeds benefiting the countries of origin. In addition to the gift sale, free decorated sugar cookies will be available. Sponsors: International Programs and Services, and Religious Life. November 20 – Study Abroad Information Session, 4 p.m., USI, University Center, Carter Hall. Representatives of USI’s study abroad programs as well as former participating students and faculty who lead trips will provide information. Refreshments also will be served and prizes will be awarded. Free and open to the public. November 21 – International Coffee Hour, 3 to 5 p.m., Wadi Café, 5225 Pearl Dr. A small Irish music group will provide the background music. Open to the public. Free admission and some refreshments provided. |
