USI Cheerleaders sharpen skills for Eagle Basketball

The University of Southern Indiana cheer team will rally fans for the USI Screaming Eagles during the 2003- 2004 basketball season, which opens this month. The team cheers at all home basketball games, select hockey games, and other USI sporting events as needed. The cheerleaders also travel to games in Louisville, Indianapolis, Chicago, St. Louis, and Owensboro to support the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The cheer team competes in the Universal Cheerleading Association's national cheerleading competition in Orlando, Florida. In January 2002 an all-girl squad placed fourth in national competition. The cheer team has not decided if it will attend nationals this year. The cheer team sponsors clinics and competitions throughout the year as fund-raising events and performs at various community events when requested, such as the Evansville Fall Festival Parade. The USI cheer team will be helping with a cheerleading clinic at Mega West Saturday, December 13. This season’s cheerleading coach is Jeri Francis. The team captains are senior Heidi Brummett, sophomore Kara Fulkerson, sophomore Lacey Kosikowski, and junior Traci Lowery. Sophomore cheer team member Jamie Woolston said, “I am looking forward to cheering for both the women’s and men’s teams this year. Both teams are exciting to watch. It would be great to beat Kentucky Wesleyan this year. We also want to go to the Elite Eight in California!"
