Student earns national award
|
April Hecker, a member of the University of Southern Indiana’s Lambda Beta chapter of Delta Zeta Sorority, is one of eight recipients of the 2003 Florence Hood Minor Award. She is the daughter of Kenneth and Ellen Hecker of Sellersburg, Indiana, and a graduate of Silver Creek High School. The national award is given annually to members of Delta Zeta who have made the greatest contributions to their college chapter and Delta Zeta through outstanding leadership on campus while maintaining a good academic record. The recipients must exhibit Delta Zeta’s standards of excellence in leadership, scholarship, philanthropy, community service, and fostering the values of sisterhood. Hecker is a senior exercise science major with a minor in nutrition and expects to graduate May 2004. She has applied to graduate school for physical therapy at the Medical University of South Carolina. While a student at USI, Hecker has participated in many extracurricular activities. She has held Delta Zeta chapter offices for intramurals, social chair, Panhellenic delegate, and was on the New Greek Housing Committee. Hecker held offices in the Student Government Association including member-at-large for Housing students, representative for the Bower Suhrheinrich School of Education and Human Services, AVP for University Affairs, head of the Eagle Athletic Support Committee, and Substance Abuse Committee for USI. She also holds membership in the Golden Key Honor Society, Order of Omega, and Habitat for Humanity. Hecker highly recommends joining a sorority because it helps meet other people and allows for campus involvement. She said, “Delta Zeta helped me realize who I truly was and what I could be.” The Florence Hood Minor award is named after the national historian in recognition of her service to the sorority. |
