Original USI play celebrates diversity
|
USI theatre students will present Celebrating Diversity, a 45-minute original play, to 160 eighth-grade students at Harwood Middle School at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 18. Set in a typical middle school classroom, the play’s characters are students representing different ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Each student is assigned to research his/her heritage. The students then share their stories in monologues accented by authentic songs, music, dance, and costumes from several cultures. Written by Jane Gilbert, USI adjunct professor of theatre, and senior Kate Boyd, Celebrating Diversity encourages understanding, acceptance, communication, and respect. The cast features Boyd, senior Angela Tinner, and freshmen Mario J.M. Reed, Rhonda Sparks, Mariane Tate, Glynn Allen, and Lucas Underwood. A total of 14 USI students are involved in the production. Presented in conjunction with Black History Month, Celebrating Diversity is sponsored by a 2003 Rotary Club of Evansville Public Education Foundation Classroom Enrichment Grant. |
