Last year’s production of Ntozake Shange’s Obie Award-winning play, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, at Bosse High School was so successful that CAPAC (Creative and Performing Arts Center) is bringing it back to Evansville. This year, University of Southern Indiana Theatre and the USI Multicultural Center are presenting it at USI Theatre on March 19, 20, and 21.
USI Theatre Managing Director Christopher Boyer said, “I thought this was a terrific opportunity for USI to partner with CAPAC. For Colored Girls… is an important play, and I’m glad our students will have a chance to see it.” Lad Dulin, CAPAC artistic director, began discussions about remounting the production with Boyer in the fall. “Our space was available, we wanted to do something that reflected diversity in our community, so it seemed like a great fit,” said Boyer.
Carrie Wilkerson, USI Multicultural Center program advisor, agreed. “Presenting this play fits right in to the work of the Multicultural Center,” said Wilkerson. “Part of our mission is creating opportunities for cultural interaction between students, the campus and the community at large that promote cultural awareness and sensitivity. It’s also a great show to be presenting during Women’s History Month, and right on the heels of Black History Month.”
Dulin said CAPAC is happy to be partnering with USI. “Our mission is providing opportunities for cultural diversity through the performing and visual arts,” he stated. “This joint effort between CAPAC and USI illustrates the positives that come from bringing Evansville’s educational, cultural, and artistic elements together.”
This year’s production of For Colored Girls… features all of the original cast members, including Natalee Ellis, Paulette Ellis, Tamara Ellis, Melissa Morehead, Henri Porter,
and Shannon Terry.
From its inception in California in 1974 to its highly acclaimed critical success at the Public Theater and on Broadway, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf has excited, inspired, and transformed audiences all over the country. Passionate and fearless, the play reveals what it is to be of color and female in the modern age. Praised by The New Yorker for "encompassing...every feeling and experience a woman has ever had," For Colored Girls…features vivid and powerful language that still resonates today.
For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf runs Friday and Saturday, March 19 and 20 at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, March 21 at 2:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $9 for adults, $7 for seniors 60 and over, and $3 with a student ID. Tickets may be purchased by calling the USI Theatre box office at 812-422-3970, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased at the door; the box office will open one hour before each performance. USI Theatre is located off campus at 3001 Igleheart Avenue at the Barker Street exit from the Lloyd Expressway. Limited parking is available next to the theatre; additional parking is provided across the street at the theatre scene shop and along Igleheart Avenue.
