Nursing leadership conference

On April 1, 2004 a nursing leadership conference for nurses in southwestern Indiana will be offered at USI, and five area nurse executives will be recognized for their leadership roles. A past executive director of the American Organization of Nurse Executives and an expert in quality improvement in health care will be the keynote speaker. She is Marjorie Beyers, PhD, RN, who has published extensively on topics including quality, organizational systems, and futures in nursing and health care. Her career has focused on patient care leadership and she works to develop innovation in health services, education, and research. She has presented over 200 speeches and workshops with topics related to futures in nursing and health care. The conference will take place in Carter Hall in the University Center at USI. The keynote address will be at 8:15 a.m. At the luncheon five nurse executives will be recognized for their leadership in southern Indiana. The honorees are Linda E. White, president and CEO, Deaconess Hospital; Christina M. Ryan, chief executive officer of the Women’s Hospital; Kathleen Korbelak, president of St. Mary’s Medical Center; Nadine Coudret, dean of the USI School of Nursing and Health Professions; and Sheila Clark, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Huntingburg. Other speakers for the conference are Sharon Cox, MSN, RN, who has over 30 years experience in health care ranging from staff nurse to unit/program manger to faculty and administrative roles in academic health centers; Jane Manning, MSN, RN, the nursing retention coordinator for Clarion Health, Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis; and Janet M. Bingle, MS, RN, chief nursing officer for Community Health Network and vice president for Clinical Standards, Education, and Research in Indianapolis. The conference is designed to energize, nurture, and inspire nurse managers, nurse leaders, and nurse educators. It will identify management and leadership strategies for creating a healthy work environment, identify key principles in creating a sanctuary of healing, and explore ways to sustain nurses in leadership roles. The conference is sponsored by the Indiana Organization of Nurse Executives Southwest Region and USI School of Nursing and Health Professions. Local and area health care agencies and hospitals are helping sponsor the event.
