The award-winning artist serving as juror for University of Southern Indiana’s 34th annual Juried Student Art Exhibition will speak on campus Thursday, April 15.

Garry Bibbs, associate professor of art studio, head of sculpture, and director of Graduate Studies at University of Kentucky, will present “Art and Keeping it Real” at 7 p.m. in Forum I of the Wright Administration Building.

His program will feature slides and a discussion of life as an artist. Bibbs creates immense fabricated stainless steel outdoor sculptures; welded aluminum, stainless steel, and bronze interior sculptures; monoprints; and welded furnishings.

Imagery from his monoprints also has been reproduced by Mario Uomo, fine Italian clothing of Chicago, in a line of silk ties and squares.

The recipient of a 1996 Southern Arts Federation, National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship for Outstanding Printmaker in the Southern States, Bibbs also received a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship that allowed him to study with internationally renowned sculptor Richard Hunt at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

His exhibition history includes showings at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Ruschman Art Gallery in Indianapolis; and the Hertz Gallery in Louisville, Ky.

Bibbs holds a B.S. from Kentucky State University and an M.F.A. from University of Kentucky. He also is a member of the Pew Civic Entrepreneur Initiative, a coalition group in Lexington with the goal of confronting and solving issues relevant to the community on race relations and leadership.

The artist’s presentation at USI, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by USI; the School of Liberal Arts; Department of Art, Music, and Theatre; the Student Government Association; and the Multicultural Center.

The 34th annual Juried Student Art Exhibition will be on display April 18-25 in the University Center.
