Area high schools compete in foreign language academic bowl

Castle High School, Southridge High School, Mt. Vernon High School and North High School took first place in the USI Foreign Language Academic Bowl on April 7 at the University of Southern Indiana. Thirty-nine teams from 17 area high schools participated. Sponsored by the USI Foreign Language Department, the competition included high schools from Evansville and from surrounding counties. They competed in French, Spanish, German, and Latin languages. In French Castle placed first, followed by Bosse, second and Evansville Day School, Third. Southridge took first in German. Other winners were Castle High School second and North High School third. Mt. Vernon High School took first in Latin. Boonville was second in that category; Reitz third. The Spanish competition was led by North High School in first; Castle, second and North Daviess, third. A song competition judged on cultural content, originality, and pronunciation was held following the academic bowl. In this category, Jasper High School and Wood Memorial tied for top honors in French, and Southridge High School in German. Other winners were Mt. Vernon High School in the Latin song competition, and Harrison High School in the Spanish song category. Carol MacKay, chair of the USI Foreign Language Department, coordinated the program. |
