RopeWalk presenting free public events

RopeWalk Writers Retreat, a program of University of Southern Indiana, will offer a variety of free readings and lectures to the public in June. The annual retreat brings writers to New Harmony, Ind., to attend workshops, write, critique the work of others, and confer privately with prominent authors. Workshop leaders and other speakers also make public presentations during the retreat, which will be held June 13-19 this year. The schedule of free public events includes: Sunday, June 13 § 2 p.m. – Reading by RopeWalk Alumni at Golden Raintree Bookstore. § 7 p.m. – Reading by Andrew Hudgins at The Atheneum. Reception follows. Free. Hudgins, who serves on the faculty at Ohio State University, has published six books of poetry, including Ecstatic in the Poison, Babylon in a Jar, the Glass Hammer, The Never-Ending, After the Lost War, and Saint and Stranger. Monday, June 14 § 7 p.m. – Reading by Erin McGraw at The Atheneum. Reception follows. Free. McGraw, associate professor of English at Ohio State University, is the author of three books: The Baby Tree, Lies of the Saints, and Bodies at Sea. Her new book, The Good Life, is forthcoming from Houghton Mifflin. Tuesday, June 15 § 9:30 a.m. – Speer Morgan Craft Lecture at The Barn Abbey. Free. Morgan, professor of English at University of Missouri, is the author of five novels: Belle Star: A Novel, Brother Enemy, The Assemblers, The Whipping Boy, and The Freshour Cylinders. § 1:30 p.m. – Erin McGraw Craft Lecture at The Barn Abbey. Free. § 7 p.m. - Reading by Leslie Ullman at The Atheneum. Reception follows. Free. Ullman, who serves on the faculty of the University of Texas El Paso’s Creative Writing Program and the Vermont College MFA Program, has published three poetry collections: Natural Histories, Dreams by No One’s Daughter, and Slow Work Through Sand. Wednesday, June 16 § 7 p.m. - Reading by Speer Morgan at The Atheneum. Reception follows. Free. Thursday, June 17 § 9:30 a.m. – Andrew Hudgins Craft Lecture at The Barn Abbey. Free. § 10:45 a.m. – Leslie Ullman Craft Lecture at The Barn Abbey. Free. § 1:30 p.m. – Rodney Jones Craft Lecture at The Barn Abbey. Free. Jones, professor of English at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, is the author of six books of poetry: The Story They Told Us of Light, The Unborn, Transparent Gestures, Apocalyptic Narrative, Things That Happen Once, and Elegy for the Southern Drawl. Friday, June 18 § 6 p.m. - Reading by Rodney Jones at The Atheneum. Free. The public also is invited to attend the RopeWalk Picnic at noon June 13 and the Closing Dinner at 7:30 p.m. June 18.
