Lincoln Institute July 8-9 at USI

Lincoln Institute July 8-9 at USI

Historic Southern Indiana will present its inaugural Lincoln Institute for Teachers July 8-9 at University of Southern Indiana in Evansville.

The workshop for K-12 teachers of all disciplines is the first in a series of annual programs focusing on Abraham Lincoln as the bicentennial of his birth approaches in 2009.

Matthew Pinsker, who serves on the faculty at Dickinson College, will be the keynote speaker. His topic will be “How We Learn About Lincoln.” Pinsker is the author of Lincoln’s Sanctuary: Abraham Lincoln and the Soldiers’ Home and Abraham Lincoln: American President Reference Series

The Institute also will feature a master teacher from West Springfield High School in Virginia who will discuss “Lincoln in the Classroom.” James Percoco is the author of A Passion for the Past: Creative Teaching of U.S. History, which won the 2000 James Harvey Robinson Prize from The American Historical Association.

Martha Beckort, media specialist with the Lanesville Community School Corp., Lanesville, Ind., will introduce participants to online and print sources and curricular materials about Lincoln. Teachers also will have an opportunity to discuss incorporating Lincoln in teaching standards, teaching Lincoln in different disciplines, and the potential for interdisciplinary work.

A tour of Lincoln-related sites in southern Indiana also is planned. The tour will include Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, Lincoln State Park, the Colonel William Jones House, and a performance of Young Abe Lincoln, the outdoor musical drama produced by USI.

Three workshop packages are available: $75, includes lunch and dinner July 8, breakfast and lunch July 9, the Young Abe Lincoln performance, site tour, and workshop materials; $99, includes everything from the first package as well as double occupancy accommodations in USI Housing July 8; and $111, includes everything from the first package as well as single occupancy accommodations in USI Housing July 8. Graduate credit also is available.
